Crafted with Purpose

Creating intentional software to help people

Who am I?

Currently, Poiema Labs is a one-man band. My name is Bryce Buchanan, and I am a developer based in Oklahoma City, OK. I am primarily a mobile developer attempting to break into the web development scene. I got my B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 2020, and my M.S. in Electrical/Computer Engineering (specializing in machine learning and telecommunications technology) in 2021. I have been in the industry since 2021, working as a mobile developer for a couple different ministry-based companies. You can read more about me on my LinkedIn page.

My heart is for the Church, ministries, and small businesses. My goal is to provide them with the software they need, in order to uniquely reach the people only they can.

Why "Poiema"?

"Poiema", in Greek, translates to "workmanship" or "handiwork." Ephesians 2:10 states, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." I chose Poiema because, at the root, I am a masterpiece, created by God, for doing good in this world. He ordained that I would be born in such a time as this for His good purposes. As God is the Creator, I am also a creator (with a lowercase 'c'), and I should strive to create things with skill and intention in a way that honors God and serves others. I'll get more into that in my guiding principles.

4 Guiding Principles

As a Christian, developer, and member of this planet, I hold myself to 4 guiding principles. If you see me deviating from these principles, please call me out.

  1. I will honor God in my practices
  2. I believe that Christ has set me free. Because of that truth, I want to see others set free. My mission is to build software that serves people's real needs, not to harvest data, chase ad revenue, or keep users hooked. Therefore, I commit to building software that is:

  3. I will use AI responsibly
  4. AI is a buzzword right now. Companies are trying to adopt it everywhere, or force it into your hands. It definitely has perks associated with utilizing it, as long as care and caution are given to it. I commit that any AI integrated into the software I write will be done with thorough research and deliberation.

You may have heard the term "AI slop" or "vibe coding", associated with software created almost entirely with AI. While it has come a long way, there are still many challenges with adopting these practices. I almost certainly, in my learning journey and development workflows, will use AI in code completion, and in the pursuit of understanding concepts. I commit to never copy-and-paste code without understanding and editing, and I hope to write most of the code myself (it's just so much fun for me!).

  5. I will always strive for improvement
  6. I have a strong desire to know everything in tech, and be able to write in any language, for any system. This can be a daunting task, but it has the side effect of giving me a spirit of learning and improvement. I commit to never stop learning, not be satisfied with "just okay", and constantly work to improve my skills, processes, and communication. At the end of the day, I want to be the best resource I can be for you, at a fraction of the cost of a software agency.

  7. I will never take myself too seriously
  8. Maybe you could tell by my informal writing style, but I don't view myself as a fully polished person. I like to have fun with my work, while maintaining a punctual and professional environment. I commit to delivering solutions in a timely manner, while keeping things light.
